A bill honoring an Oklahoma Highway Patrol officer who was killed in the line of duty has cleared the State Senate and will next be considered in the House of Representatives. Sen. Rob Standridge is the principal author of Senate Bill 338, creating the Lt. Heath Meyer #64 Memorial Highway. The measure was approved unanimously on Monday—the same day the man responsible for the high speed chase that resulted in Meyer’s death was convicted of murder.
“Lt. Meyer was a good and decent man, devoted to the service of others. He was honored with numerous awards from the Highway Patrol, and was a beloved husband, father, son, brother, and friend,” said Standridge, R-Norman. “I am humbled to have presented this bill honoring Lt. Meyer and ask for everyone to continue to pray for his family, friends and fellow officers.”
Under SB 338, a two mile stretch of I-35 one mile north and one mile south of N. 27th Street in Moore will be designated as the “Lt. Heath Meyer #64 Memorial Highway,” effective November 1, 2019. The “64” was his badge number.
“I look forward to the House passing this legislation and Governor Stitt signing it into law so that we can pay tribute to Lt. Meyer and remember his life and service,” Standridge said.
