Garvin named vice chair of Senate Retirement and Insurance Committee

OKLAHOMA CITY – Sen. Jessica Garvin has been named the new vice chair of the Senate Retirement and Insurance Committee. The Duncan Republican’s new leadership position was announced this week by Senate President Pro Tempore Greg Treat.

“I’m honored to have been entrusted by Pro Tem Treat to help lead the Retirement and Insurance Committee,” Garvin said. “With my years of experience in the healthcare industry, I’m very familiar with the insurance industry and am looking forward to working to protect and strengthen the retirement systems of our hardworking public servants who have dedicated their careers to helping their fellow Oklahomans.”

The committee deals with legislative issues relating to the regulation of private insurance, along with bills concerning the state’s six public pension systems, which includes the Teachers’ Retirement System of Oklahoma (TRS); Oklahoma Public Employees Retirement System (OPERS); the Uniform Retirement System of Justices and Judges (URSJJ); the Oklahoma Firefighters Pension and Retirement System (OFPRS); the Oklahoma Police Pension and Retirement System (OPPRS); and the Oklahoma Law Enforcement Retirement System (OLERS).

“Senator Garvin brings energy and experience to the role of vice chair, and I know that she will do a great job for the Senate and the state of Oklahoma,” Treat said.

Garvin will continue serving on the Appropriations Subcommittee on Health and Human Services, along with the Business, Commerce and Tourism, Rules, and Transportation Committees.

“Our district is incredibly fortunate to have Jessica representing us at the Capitol. She has proven herself to be a pragmatic and thoughtful lawmaker and is well respected by members of both chambers for putting people over politics,” said Rep. Marcus McEntire, R-Duncan. “It is rare for a freshman senator to be appointed to leadership, but she is an extremely hard worker and has earned her position as vice chairwoman. I’m proud to serve with her, but I’m even more proud to be represented by her.”
