Frix, Hays Issue Statement on Muskogee High School Protest, Condemn Assault

OKLAHOMA CITY – Senator Avery Frix, R-Muskogee, and Representative Neil Hays, R-Checotah, released the following statement Tuesday urging local law enforcement to investigate an alleged assault during a protest held by students at Muskogee High School.

“We were recently made aware of video evidence depicting an incident that occurred during a student-led anti-ICE protest at Muskogee High School. This footage shows an older gentleman approaching the group of protesters to speak with them, and students responded by pouring liquids on him.

“This behavior does not align with the values of our community or the standards we expect students in our local schools to uphold. We respect these students' right to practice their First Amendment freedoms of speech and peaceful assembly, but such expression should never result in harm to others.

“We condemn such acts and extend our thoughts to the individual involved, as no one should be subjected to violence or danger while exercising their right to engage in civil discourse.

“As representatives of this community, we are calling on local law enforcement and school officials to thoroughly investigate this incident and hold anyone who engaged in these acts accountable.”
