OKLAHOMA CITY – A measure authored by State Sen. Micheal Bergstrom aimed at stronger consumer protections in regards to meat labeling was recently signed into law by Gov. Kevin Stitt.
Senate Bill 392 requires and regulates meat labeling and advertising, which addresses misleading product labeling practices, advertising in the sale of animal carcass, and food plans. The measure prohibits any person or entity involved in the sale of all or part of a carcass or food plan from engaging in deceptive practices, including misleading the buyer with regards to the sourcing of the meat, quality or quantity of the meat, replacing one meat for another, or diluting the meat with less desirable meat. The measure exempts packaging for plant-based items if the packaging of the item clearly states that the product is derived from plant-based sources.
“This measure essentially protects consumers by requiring those who sell a product to label it correctly and market it honestly,” said Bergstrom, R- Adair. “This improvement in the law will ensure consumers may feel more confident in the integrity of certain food purchases they are making.”
SB 392 will go into effect 90 days after the legislative session adjourns.
