Burns takes oath, begins first senate term

George Burns is officially the State Senator for District 5 after being sworn into office in a scaled-down ceremony held at the State Capitol on Monday. The oath of office was given in the Senate chamber in small groups to accommodate for COVID-19 safety protocols and ongoing Capitol construction projects.

The Pollard Republican started his career as a journeyman electrician and rose through the ranks to become part owner of a leading electrical engineering and construction firm. He’s also served as the president of a local electrical cooperative. Burns is an advocate for protecting religious freedoms, law enforcement, veterans and agriculturalists, and said he will champion rural schools and businesses at the Capitol.

“I’m humbled by the faith the citizens of southeastern Oklahoma have placed in me to represent their values at our state Capitol,” Burns said. “Our work is far from finished, and I’m excited to advocate for our way of life and the best interests of Senate District 5.”

The Senate will hold a one-day organizational meeting on Jan. 5 and will begin the First Session of the 58th Legislature on Feb. 1.
