Burns Bill to Transfer Hugo Lake Park Properties Advances Through Senate

OKLAHOMA CITY – Senate Bill 1252, introduced by Sen. George Burns, R-Pollard, has successfully passed a vote of the full Senate on Thursday. The bill aims to transfer all properties currently held for Hugo Lake Park to the Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Department by January 1, 2025.

Additionally, the bill specifies that the Department shall not be held responsible for any claims arising under The Governmental Tort Claims Act that accrued prior to January 1, 2025. However, the Department will succeed to any contractual rights and responsibilities of the previous operators, ensuring a smooth and efficient transfer process.

“This bill represents a significant opportunity to improve the infrastructure and recreational offerings at Hugo Lake Park,” Burns said. “By streamlining management responsibilities, we aim to enhance the visitor experience and ensure Hugo Lake remains a cherished destination for generations to come.”

SB 1252 has previously passed through both the Tourism and Wildlife Committee and the Appropriations Committee, underscoring its widespread support and recognition of its potential to benefit Oklahoma residents and visitors alike.

SB 1252 now moves to the House for further consideration.
