Boren sworn in for second term in state Senate

OKLAHOMA CITY –Sen. Mary Boren, D-Norman, has officially begun her second term in the state Senate following an oath of office ceremony at the Capitol on Nov. 16. Lt. Gov. Matt Pinnell presided over the ceremony, with Oklahoma Supreme Court Chief Justice Richard Darby administering the oath.

Boren has been a strong advocate for education and teachers, protecting the rights of women and children, including pregnant students. This past year, she has also fought tirelessly to stop the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority's proposed expansion in and around Norman that will displace thousands of homeowners, businesses, nonprofits, and disrupt the ecosystem and habitats for wildlife, including endangered species.

The National Caucus of Environmental Legislators also gave Boren the honor of serving as the state lead for Oklahoma. In this position, she advocates for clean energy, economic opportunities and conservation of Oklahoma’s wildlife, habitats, and natural resources.

“It is an honor to continue serving the Norman community in the state Senate, and I appreciate my constituents trusting me to be their voice,” Boren said. “I’m honored to represent District 16, including the interests of students and employees at the University of Oklahoma, which is a massive economic engine for our state.”

Boren said she is looking forward to bipartisan collaboration in the upcoming session and hopes to protect her constituents from wasteful and distracting divisive partisanship. Ahead of the session, the Senate will meet on Jan. 3 to elect chamber leaders, adopt rules and prepare for the 59th Oklahoma Legislature, which convenes on Feb. 6.
