Bill to pay for funerals of fallen National Guardsmen heads to governor

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Senate unanimously approved legislation Monday to honor members of the Oklahoma National Guard who are killed in the line of duty. Sen. David Bullard said House Bill 2374 will cover up to $10,000 of funeral expenses for the state’s heroes who lay down their lives while serving on state active-duty orders.

“There is no greater sacrifice or display of true patriotism than taking up arms and serving your country and state knowing that you may have to give your life,” Bullard said. “The bravery and selflessness of our military men and women is awe-inspiring. They’re willing to give it all to protect us and those around the world who can’t protect themselves. This bill will help the state honor that sacrifice and service by helping cover the costs of their final internment. God bless these brave souls, and I want to thank the House and Senate for their overwhelming support of this incredible measure.”

Under provisions of HB 2374, eligibility for the new program will be determined by the Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management, who will provide funds to military families from the Oklahoma Homeland Security Revolving Fund.

Rep. Dean Davis, R-Broken Arrow, is the bill’s House author that now moves to the governor’s office for final consideration.

“I’m proud to have authored this important bill to honor the lives and sacrifice of our brave National Guard men and women who paid the ultimate price in service to their country and state,” Davis said. “Having lost a loved one, these families shouldn’t have to worry about funeral expenses. Just as their loved one was there for the state of Oklahoma, we will be there for them at their time of need providing this financial assistance as they are laid to their final resting place.”
