Currently, around eight million women in the U.S. are living with heart disease, yet only one in five believes that cardiovascular disease is her greatest health threat. For this reason, Sen. Kim David joined with other female legislators Thursday for Wear Red Lobby Day at the State Capitol to help raise awareness of the disease that kills a woman nearly every minute.

“I’m so proud to be a part of this effort to raise awareness of heart disease among my colleagues. Unfortunately, my mother was among those whose lives were cut short by this disease and I want to make sure other families don’t lose loved ones to this totally preventable disease,” said David, R-Porter. “With one woman dying nearly every minute in our country from this disease, we have no time to waste. We must do all we can to educate our fellow women; and I applaud the American Heart Association for their tireless efforts to do just that.”

Nearly as many women die of heart disease, stroke, and all other cardiovascular disease as those killed by the next three leading causes of death combined, including all cancers. While one in 30 American women dies from breast cancer each year, one in three or over 419,000 women die of heart disease.

Go Red for Women is the American Heart Association’s (AHA) national call to increase awareness about heart disease – the leading cause of death for women – and to inspire women to take charge of their heart health. The AHA reminds women to learn about their own personal risk for heart disease using tools such as the association’s My Life Check, Go Red for Women Heart Checkup, Go Red for Women Better U, and by talking to their healthcare provider.

February 5-11 is Go Red for Women Week in the state of Oklahoma. Sen. David authored Senate Resolution 30 in recognition of the special event.
