Sen. David congratulates local students appointed to education council

OKLAHOMA CITY – Three students from Senate District 18 were recently appointed to serve as delegates on the newly-formed Oklahoma State Department of Education Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council.  Olivia Kuester from Coweta Junior High, Kristen Webb from Haskell High School and Amber Hatton-Hunt representing Wagoner High School/Indian Capital Tech attended their first meeting on Thursday morning in the Blue Room of the State Capitol. 
            Sen. Kim David applauded the students’ outstanding achievements and their willingness to be involved in the process to help improve education in Oklahoma. 
            “It’s refreshing to see young people not only talk about how our state government can be improved but actually taking the time to be a part of the process to find better solutions.  They’re in the classroom and know what changes need to be made to improve their schools and better prepare them for the workforce or college,” said David, R-Porter.  “I congratulate them on their achievements and encourage them to continue to be an active voice in their state government.” 
            The group was formed by State Superintendent of Public Instruction Joy Hofmeister to provide a forum for students to share their thoughts and concerns about common education in Oklahoma. 
            Members of the council were nominated by the superintendents of their districts.  Sixty-seven students from across the state attended the meeting.
            Among the topics that were discussed were end-of-instruction exams, bullying and teacher pay.
            The Council’s next meeting will be this spring.
