Sen. Darcy Jech issues statement on tornado damage in Elk City area

On Tuesday, May 16, a tornado touched down in south Elk City, destroying at least 40 homes and heavily damaging several others.  State Senator Darcy Jech, R-Kingfisher, Senate District 26, issued the following statement Wednesday.

“I’ve had the opportunity to see firsthand the damage in the Elk City area and it’s even more devastating than the media has been able to portray on camera.  Unfortunately, there was loss of life in the storm, but there could have been far more victims without the early warning system.  Several days’ advance notice in the weather forecast, combined with the early warning sirens that went off prior to the tornado touching down, allowed people enough time to make an emergency plan and seek shelter.  Those early warning precautions likely saved lives yesterday.”

“I want to thank the first responders as they continue to do a great job providing assistance to those affected.  Their quick action in the immediate aftermath of the storm made a tremendous difference in the rescue of several victims and their efforts continues to be vital as the community begins to recover.  It’s heartwarming to see so many Oklahomans step in to help the Elk City community.  I’m proud of the way Oklahomans are always ready and willing to pitch in and help when needed and that same sense of community and support is evident today in Elk City.”
