Sen. Boren tapped for multiple committee assignments

State Sen. Mary Boren has received her committee appointments for the 57th Legislature which includes the 2019 and 2020 legislative sessions.  Boren, D-Norman, will serve on the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Education, the Agriculture and Wildlife Committee, the Energy Committee and the Judiciary Committee.

“I’m extremely gratified by each of these assignments.  These areas are extremely important to District 16 and will enable me to have a vote on hundreds of proposed laws that could have a direct impact on the people who live here,” Boren said. “My guiding force in deciding my votes in each of these committees will be whether this will be good public policy for the citizens I represent in the Senate.”

Boren’s diverse professional background resulted in her appointments on the Appropriations Subcommittee on Education and the Judiciary Committee.  Boren is an attorney, having earned her Juris Doctorate from the University of Oklahoma.  She’s currently completing a Master’s in Education at the university.

“I’m very pleased to bring my legal background to the Judiciary Committee.  Likewise, my experience in education has well prepared me for my work on the Subcommittee on Education,” Boren said.  “While the teacher pay raises approved in the 2018 session were a long-overdue investment, we must continue to build on that momentum.  A quality education for Oklahoma students is directly tied to being able to attract and keep gifted, professional educators.”

“One of the unique things about Senate District 16 is how it includes not only the city of Norman but rural communities as well, including Noble, Lexington and Slaughterville.  Within those communities and surrounding areas farming, ranching and wildlife are extremely important.  Having a seat on the Agriculture and Wildlife Committee will help me better represent the rural areas within this district and their concerns,” Boren said.

“Oil and gas are major drivers in our state’s economy and impact every Senate District, including this one—but District 16 also has a great interest in renewable energy sources, including solar.  It’s an important component in a comprehensive energy plan, so I am looking forward to helping shape policy through my work on the Senate Energy Committee,” Boren said.
