OKC Diabetes Action Day slated for Thursday

State Sen. Carri Hicks, co-chair of the Oklahoma Legislative Diabetes Caucus, announced a “Diabetes Action Day” will be held at 9 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 12 at Oklahoma City’s Skydance Bridge, which will be lit blue to promote diabetes awareness.

In addition to her work with the Legislative Diabetes Caucus, Hicks is the mother of a child with Type I Diabetes.

“November is Diabetes Awareness Month, and this is an issue that is extremely important to our state,” said Hicks, D-Oklahoma City.  “Last year, Oklahoma had the 12th highest prevalence of diabetes in the nation—it’s the seventh leading cause of death in the state.  If we want to improve Oklahoma’s health outcomes, we must do more to help prevent diabetes and improve access to affordable medicine and supplies.  Raising awareness is central to those efforts.”

Diabetes Action Day will include remarks by:

  • Oklahoma City Mayor David Holt
  • Oklahoma City Councilman James Cooper
  • Sen. Carri Hicks
  • Clayton McCook, the parent of a child with Type 1 Diabetes
  • Oklahoma Arts Council Executive Director Amber Sharples

The event will also feature a performance by the RACE Dance Collective in support of the #DancingForDiabetes challenge, encouraging Oklahomans to participate in physical activity which can help prevent Type II Diabetes, and as a healthy activity for those living with diabetes.
