Sen. Roger Thompson issues statement following Wednesday’s events in Washington D.C.

Sen. Roger Thompson, R-Okemah, issued the following statement on Thursday after demonstrations supporting President Trump at the U.S. Capitol turned violent on Wednesday.

While I support the right of all Americans to peacefully assemble, what occurred Wednesday in Washington D.C. is a sad and tragic commentary on what has happened to some people in America.  To attack the seat of our democracy, the people’s house, is totally unacceptable.

“Words have consequences and now we’ve seen some of these consequences.  These events cost four lives, injured first responders, and desecrated the halls of Congress.  We are better than this. Those who entered the halls of democracy to cause mayhem and destruction should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

“Instead of sowing seeds of violence and division, let us pray for peace and unity.”
