Bingman comments on Justice Reinvestment Initiative
Public Safety report
The Council of State Governments Justice Center, in partnership
with the Pew Center on the States and the U.S. Department of Justice’s
Bureau of Justice Assistance on Wednesday released a comprehensive
report on Oklahoma’s criminal justice system. The report offers
recommendations on how to reduce violent crime while controlling
costs.
President Pro Tempore Brian
Bingman, R-Sapulpa, offered the following comments regarding
the report.
“Public Safety has to be a fundamental priority for state
government. I am encouraged by the substance and spirit of the Justice
Reinvestment Initiative Public Safety Report, particularly the focus
on increasing public safety, reducing our violent crime rate and
effectively targeting taxpayer resources so our corrections program
is efficient and sustainable for the future.
Similar initiatives in other states have yielded important structural
reforms, and we ought to thoughtfully and deliberately consider
the recommendations of the report. I appreciate the efforts of the
working group and the expert input of the men and women on the front
line of fighting crime in our state.”
