Senator Mike Schulz
Schulz Introduces Livestock Protection
Legislation
City zoning still permitted
Senate Bill 452 by Senator Mike
Schulz, R-Altus, passed out of the Agriculture and Rural Development
Committee on Monday, calling for adequate protection of livestock
throughout Oklahoma.
The provisions in Senate Bill 452 limit the power
of political subdivisions in Oklahoma when dealing with the care
and handling of livestock. Local legislation in violation of this
bill is void and unenforceable. However, Schulz says the intent
of the legislation is not to preempt a city’s ability to
zone.
“Senate Bill 452 is a proactive measure that
prevents out-of-state groups from dictating how our producers
care and handle their livestock,” said Schulz. “We
want our producers to be free to make decisions regarding their
livestock based on the operations they run. The intent of this
legislation is not to put restrictions on city zoning ordinances,
but to simply prevent any regulation from being put on producers’
freedoms to manage their livestock.”
Senate Bill 452 will now go before the full Senate
for consideration.
